EWING – Games get heated with a championship on the mind.
“In the NJAC everyone is out to get us,” says Katie Lindacher, one of the assistant coaches of The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team.
One of these NJAC games is coming up today Saturday, September 23rd at 1:00 p.m. when the Lions will take on the New Jersey City University in their second conference game of the season.
Lindacher all too well knows of the energy and emotions that goes into winning a conference title. As a former player for the Lions, Lindacher played with the dynamic team that won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) back in 2013.
Facing Montclair State University for a grueling 110 minutes of soccer, two overtimes and then penalty kicks, the Lions came out victorious. Current women’s soccer player Christine Levering also played in this title game back in 2013, just at the beginning of her dominant career at TCNJ. In her first season, the Lions won the conference and she was named the 2013 NJAC Rookie of the Year.
The hunger for another conference title like this one is clear looking at the Lions performance this season. Attacking each team so far with this hunger, the Lions have secured a 6-0 record.
“Just from our history and our past, we’ve always been a strong team. I think the difference is the girls are really working on team chemistry and being really close this year,” said Lindacher.
This winning streak made even more impressive that TCNJ has a complete shutout thus far into the season. Opponents don’t stand a chance of scoring a goal, let alone getting a win against the Lions.
With a 6-0 record this season, the Lions also hold a 1-0 record in their conference, with their win over William Paterson University. But the Lions face a heavy rest of the season with eight more conference teams to face.
TCNJ will play NJCU, a team with a current 2-5 record, at home in the TCNJ Soccer Complex.
If the Lions stay consistent with the way they have been playing, TCNJ should see the winning streak continue, securing another win in the NJAC.
Playing with their all, the Lions intend to keep on winning, keep the shutout alive and push forward for a NJCA championship. Bringing back the title they had claimed in 2013 and so greatly strive for now.
