EWING – Could this be the beginning of something new for TCNJ Lions Football?

The 0-3 Lions come into this weekend’s game against the high-flying Salisbury Sea Gulls looking to turn around what has been a less than stellar start to the season.

Salisbury University comes into this game at Lions’ Stadium, a noon kickoff in Ewing, as the overwhelming favorite after they had defeated Southern Virginia by a dominating score of 91-7.

The Sea Gulls began the season with a narrow, 24-23 loss to Albright before taking advantage of their bye week and defeated Montclair State University 46-14 away from home. Then came the the demolition of Southern Virginia.

For TCNJ head coach Wayne Dickens and his team, they will come into this game as the underdogs and a victory over the Sea Gulls at home could be exactly what they need to jump-start their season.

“This game will be very important to our program as we hope to restart our season after the bye week,” Dickens said. “We need to go out there [today] and show what we have worked on over the past two weeks. Coming out with another loss is not an option.”

This will be the first time TCNJ and Salisbury will play since the Sea Gulls joined the New Jersey Athletic Conference as associate members this past summer.

Despite Salisbury’s impressive start to the season, Dickens is not phased.

“The new teams added to the conference this season make it a lot tougher,” he said, “but it should also make us stronger as a program.”

For the Lions, the team will hope to continue improving its defense.

After allowing over 30 points in their opening two games, TCNJ managed to hold Kean to just 23 in their last game. This, however, will be tough against a Sea Gulls’ offense who saw wide-receiver Aarron Moore go off for 104 yards against Southern Virginia.

“It will be tough but we have prepared hard for this game,” Dickens said. “The team is prepared for anything Salisbury is able to throw at us.”
